A-Flat Major¶

A-flat major is a Western tonal key whose tonic pitch class is A-flat and whose diatonic major scale is A-flat, B-flat, C, D-flat, E-flat, F, and G. Its conventional key signature contains four flats: B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, and D-flat. Scale-degree and chord functions are interpreted relative to A-flat as tonal center, with E-flat serving as dominant and D-flat as subdominant in common-practice harmony.
The key is more than an unordered seven-note collection or a key signature. Tonal hierarchy, cadential behavior, harmonic progression, melodic emphasis, and context establish A-flat as center. It is enharmonically related to G-sharp major in equal temperament, but the notations have different spellings, readability, and functional implications.
