Absolute dating¶
The estimation of an event or object's numerical age or calendar range rather than only its relative order.
Core Idea¶
Often called chronometric dating, the practice uses radiometric decay, dendrochronology, trapped charge, annual layers or historically anchored evidence, each with calibration, contamination and uncertainty limits that make 'absolute' potentially misleading. A time-sensitive observable is measured, a model connects it to elapsed or calendar time, reference standards and calibration correct systematic effects and uncertainty propagates into an age estimate or interval. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
