Acidity function¶
Measure a solvent system's effective hydron-donating or accepting power relative to a specified indicator family when ordinary dilute-aqueous pH is not an adequate standalone scale.
Core Idea¶
An acidity function is an operational function measuring the thermodynamic hydron-donating or hydron-accepting ability of a solvent system, or a closely related tendency, relative to a specified solute or indicator family. The medium shifts an indicator equilibrium; combining the indicator's reference dissociation constant with the observed conjugate-form ratio yields a scale value that compares protonating or deprotonating power across compositions.
Its autonomous residual is an indicator-qualified operational acidity scale for nonideal or concentrated media, not acidity in general, one acid's dissociation constant, or a universal property of the solvent alone. The identity fails when the indicator dependence is erased, pH and H0 are treated as interchangeable outside their common limit, concentration replaces activity without qualification, or a negative function value is interpreted as a literal fantastically large free-proton molarity.
Scope of Application¶
Acidity function applies when the analyst can specify a solvent or medium composition, a homologous family of indicator acids or bases, their conjugate forms, and an operational equilibrium or spectroscopic response and establish that the value is defined through a declared indicator equilibrium and convention, so it belongs to the paired medium-indicator system rather than being an indicator-free concentration of bare hydrogen ions.
