Acquisition event¶
Record the punctual moment an actor took possession of a resource — with a before-state, after-state, transfer instrument, and timestamp — so isolated holdings become a walkable chain of title that provenance can be reconstructed from.
Core Idea¶
An acquisition event is a discrete, timestamped record of the moment an actor took legal, physical, or institutional possession of a resource — the basis for later provenance reconstruction. CIDOC CRM designates it E8 Acquisition, with six elements: an acquiring actor, a resource, a transfer instrument (purchase, donation, conquest, loan, hire), bounded before- and after-possession states, a timestamp, and a provenance link to the prior holder. It is the minimal unit of custodial record-keeping.
Scope of Application¶
The acquisition event lives across custodial and ownership record-keeping — wherever a chain of title or provenance must be reconstructed from discrete, instrument-bearing transition records.

Clarity¶
Treating acquisition as a recorded event rather than a fact about current custody makes provenance reconstruction possible: a bounded transition with a before-state, after-state, and instrument lets custodial history become a chain that can be walked. It also makes the instrument a first-class fact — a purchase, donation, conquest, or loan differ in legitimacy, reversibility, and evidentiary weight — so a registrar can ask where the chain begins and which transitions are weakest.
Manages Complexity¶
An object's custodial past is, in the raw, an unbounded tangle of undocumented hands and transfers. The acquisition event quantizes it into discrete records of one fixed shape, so the whole story compresses to a chain of uniform nodes. The question "how did this come to be here?" reduces to walking the chain, and its soundness to scanning a few fields per node — instrument fixes legitimacy, timestamp fixes the governing regime, gaps stand out as missing links.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The quantized chain supports diagnosis (read the weakest transition off its instrument, since soundness is bounded by the weakest node; locate where the documented chain begins; infer the governing legal regime from the timestamp), interventionist action (produce the chain as evidence retrospectively; record the transfer now for future accountability), and boundary-drawing (a punctual transition versus ongoing possession; chain of title versus chain of physical location).
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within custodial and ownership record-keeping the concept transfers as mechanism: accession registers, legal chains of title, and capability grants are co-instances sharing the same chain-reconstruction logic and instrument-confers-legitimacy diagnostic. Beyond it the transfer becomes analogy — a git commit or ledger posting has a before/after and timestamp but no ownership-legitimacy instrument — so the portable content is the parent prime recorded state-transition (made auditable by logging, yielding traceability), not the possession-specific machinery.
