Affective events theory¶
Explain workplace attitudes and behavior by tracing how features of the work environment generate daily events, which elicit emotions and moods that drive affective reactions alongside slower cognitive judgments.
Core Idea¶
Affective events theory (AET) models how workplace events cause affective reactions that influence behavior and contribute, over time and alongside cognition, to job satisfaction and performance-related outcomes.[1] Work conditions alter the frequency and type of hassles and uplifts; events trigger appraisals and affect shaped by disposition; affect drives immediate behavior, while accumulated experience and cognitive judgments influence broader attitudes. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of organizational psychology. It is event-level mediation from work context through affect to behavior, with disposition and cognitive appraisal kept as distinct paths. That residual remains recognizable when examples, notation, scale, or implementation change, but it disappears if the carrier is mistyped, the condition that the explanation distinguishes environment from event, event from affect, affect-driven reaction from cognitive judgment, and short-term episode from accumulated attitude fails, a neighboring object is substituted, or notation and topical resemblance replace the constitutive test. Scope of Application¶
