Age set¶
Form a named cohort through a bounded recruitment period whose members retain a collective identity and advance together through age-graded social statuses.
Core Idea¶
An age set is a named social cohort whose members are recruited during a defined period, retain membership and a shared identity over much of the life course, and move collectively through statuses or age grades within a wider age-organization system. Periodic recruitment closes a cohort, initiation and naming make membership socially legible, durable ties preserve the group as members age, and the wider system advances whole sets through graded responsibilities, privileges, or authority relative to older and younger sets.
Scope of Application¶
Age set applies when the analyst can specify a society with formal age organization, a recruitment rule that groups persons into a named cohort, and a sequence of statuses through which the cohort persists and establish that membership belongs to one historically formed cohort rather than to everyone currently occupying an age category, the cohort persists as its members age, and collective movement or ranking connects it to an organized sequence of statuses. The entry uses comparative anthropology while requiring local categories, historical context, and current community scholarship. It does not rank societies, assume one gender pattern, or treat age organization as a timeless ethnic essence.
Clarity¶
A clear claim names the carrier, governing rule, assumptions, and recognition test. This matters because age set, age class, generation set, grade, regiment, and age group vary across ethnographic traditions, and the same local institution can be translated differently by different authors.
Identity and measurement remain separate. Chronological ages alone cannot recover the institution; evidence must document native membership categories, recruitment histories, names, progression rules, offices, and change over time.
