Agent provocateur¶
An infiltrator or operative who goes beyond observation to induce a target person or group toward unlawful or discrediting conduct, creating an evidentiary, political or repressive pretext that might not otherwise exist.
Core Idea¶
An agent provocateur is an operative who infiltrates or approaches a target and actively encourages criminal, rash or reputation-damaging action in order to expose, prosecute, compromise or justify action against the target. The operative gains access or trust, introduces or intensifies a proposed act, records or publicizes the response, and lets the sponsor use the induced conduct as evidence or legitimation. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Agent provocateur belongs to law and political security and is useful where the analyst can specify an employing authority or sponsor, covert operative, target person or group, induced conduct, evidence or public narrative, and a legal or political response, then evaluate active inducement by an operative is causally material to the conduct or its escalation, and the resulting act is used against the target.
