Altmetrics¶
Indicators of scholarly attention derived from online platforms, downloads, news, policy documents, social media and other traces that complement rather than replace citation measures.
Core Idea¶
Altmetrics are nontraditional metrics of attention, discussion, use or dissemination around scholarly objects based on digital activity beyond conventional citation indexes. Providers collect identifier-linked events from heterogeneous platforms, deduplicate and weight sources and expose counts or composite scores whose meaning depends on platform behavior. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of scientometrics. It is cross-platform digital traces of scholarly attention with strong source and interpretation dependence.
Scope of Application¶
Altmetrics belongs to scientometrics and is useful where the analyst can specify a research output or actor, online platforms and event traces, identifiers, data providers, event types, aggregation and normalization rules, bots and missingness, and an interpretive use, then evaluate every indicator declares event sources, time window, coverage, deduplication and whether it measures attention, engagement or claimed impact.
