Clarity

The memo pulls apart three artifacts routinely collapsed into "my analysis": the raw data, the intermediate reasoning, and the final claim. Keeping the middle term visible makes a chain of interpretation auditable and forbids the failure mode of conclusions reconstructed after the fact. It also separates the interpretive memo from the definitional codebook.

Manages Complexity

A qualitative project is a mass of hundreds of hours of transcripts against which a defensible, evidence-traceable theory must be built. Holding the interpretation in one's head leaves it un-auditable; reconstructing it later loses the contemporaneous reasoning. The memo externalises the process into a second navigable corpus — dated, typed, indexed — that is the working theory and can be walked backward from any claim to its evidence.
