Anonymous Sourcing¶
Publish information with the source's identity hidden from the audience but known to and vouched for by a reputation-staking intermediary, so the intermediary's verification procedure substitutes for the source's named credibility in the audience's trust calculus.
Core Idea¶
Anonymous sourcing is the practice in which substantive information is published with the source's identity withheld from the public but known to and verified by a trusted intermediary — an editor or counsel — who stakes institutional reputation on the source's reliability. It is a three-party trade: the source gives information it would not give on the record, the audience surrenders direct source-inspection, and the intermediary's reputation substitutes for the source's named one. It holds only while the audience trusts the verification procedure.
Scope of Application¶
Anonymous sourcing lives across the reporting subfields of journalism, wherever an unnameable source is routed through a vouching editorial chain to a public audience.
- Investigative and political reporting — leak-driven accountability work (Deep Throat).
- Gradient attribution protocols — on background, deep background, off the record.
- National-security reporting — sources reachable only under anonymity.
- Whistleblower-driven journalism — insiders risking employment or legal exposure.
- The corroboration apparatus — the two-source rule and editorial review chain.
Clarity¶
Naming it as a three-party arrangement makes legible what the audience surrenders (direct inspection) and gets (information that would not exist on the record). It is a deliberate trade to justify, not a lapse from transparency, and the two-source rule is the instrument that keeps the trade worth making. The working question becomes "is our verification procedure strong enough to be what the audience is actually trusting?"
Manages Complexity¶
The per-claim tangle of crediting unnameable testimony collapses to one three-party arrangement set by a few standing variables — intermediary, verification procedure, corroboration, disclosure. The editor stops re-deriving judgment per case and tracks one quantity: procedure strength. The single failure mode is localized to one chokepoint — intermediary capture, an agenda-driven source escaping a weak protocol.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept supports a diagnostic move — reading a claim's credibility off the intermediary's protocol, not the absent source, and inferring procedure failure when a claim proves false — an interventionist move — setting the corroboration bar to the claim's sensitivity — and a prediction of contagion: one exposed fabrication discredits the protocol and every claim it underwrote at once.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within journalism the mechanism transfers intact across protocols and the editorial chain. Beyond it the same triangle recurs — HUMINT case-officer, peer-review editor, whistleblower hotline, witness protection — but the genuinely portable object is the general intermediary-vouched-anonymity pattern, itself a composition of information_asymmetry, delegated trust, and a provenance chain truncated at the public boundary. Calling those "anonymous sourcing" imports the journalism label across a line its content does not cross. dag_edges:

Anonymous Sourcing is a strict specialization of Vouched Anonymity.
-
Anonymous Sourcing is a decomposition of Reputation Prime
The intermediary's accumulated public standing substitutes for the hidden source's unavailable named credibility and is put at risk by each vouched claim.

On Background Domain-specific is a kind of Anonymous Sourcing
On Background is the class-descriptor species of Anonymous Sourcing: the claim is published, the source is known inside the newsroom, and identity is hidden from readers.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Anonymous Sourcing sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (14th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
