Anti-patriotism¶
A principled opposition to patriotic attachment or compulsory national loyalty, often grounded in cosmopolitan, internationalist, anti-militarist, or anti-authoritarian commitments.
Core Idea¶
Anti-patriotism questions whether country deserves love, priority, obedience, or sacrifice simply by birth or membership. Arguments may target nationalism, coercion, militarized loyalty, exclusion, or suppressed dissent.
Because the term is often accusatory, analysis distinguishes self-avowed doctrine from labels imposed on critics or minorities. Opposition to one government or war is insufficient; the object is the patriotic norm itself.

Critique of the Patriotic Norm
Scope of Application¶
- Political philosophy. Examines national loyalty.
- War and dissent. Studies resistance to sacrifice.
- Rhetoric. Analyzes pejorative labels.
- Nationalism studies. Separates attachment and doctrine.
- Civic ethics. Compares local and universal obligations.
Clarity¶
Identify speaker, target norm, reasons, alternative solidarities, context, and whether the label is self-used or attributed. Avoid inferring ideology from one act. Inclusion test: Require principled opposition to patriotic obligation or national attachment, with actor, reasons, alternatives, and context distinguished from accusation. Exclusion test: Exclude government criticism, legal treason, apathy toward symbols, cosmopolitan identity retaining patriotism, and pluralism labeled anti-patriotic by opponents. Nearest boundary: Anti-nationalism opposes nationalist doctrine; anti-patriotism targets patriotic attachment and demanded loyalty, though they overlap. Exit condition: The identity ends when the actor affirms patriotism while contesting only one policy. Common misclassifications: It is not every criticism of government. It is not automatically treason. It is not apathy toward flags. It is not identical to cosmopolitanism. Nearest named distinctions: Anti-Nationalism: Rejects nationalist doctrine; anti-patriotism rejects patriotic attachment. Cosmopolitanism: Can coexist with limited patriotism. Treason: Is a legal offense, not ideological dissent. Government Criticism: Can be patriotic and does not establish rejection.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction separates opposition to patriotic duty from adjacent policy criticism and exposes classification as political when opponents control the label.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Identify the expectation rejected.
- Recover reasons and commitments.
- Distinguish nation, state, government, and policy.
- Place expression in context.
- Separate self-identification from accusation.
- Test general versus particular rejection.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The transferable cargo is critique of demanded group loyalty based on membership. It transfers to other allegiance systems only by analogy; it stops at calling all dissent disloyal.
