Area chart¶
A quantitative graphic that plots a line against an ordered axis and fills the region to a baseline, optionally stacking multiple series to show composition over time or another continuum.
Core Idea¶
Area charts emphasize magnitude and cumulative composition, but filled regions, baselines, stacking order, occlusion, negative values, and nonzero axes can distort comparisons if not declared carefully. Ordered observations define one or more boundary lines; the space between each line and a common or cumulative baseline is filled, with stacking computing successive sums when composition is intended. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
