Core Idea

Artificial sunlight is optical radiation deliberately produced to reproduce the sunlight properties relevant to a declared task when natural exposure is unavailable, variable, unsafe, or insufficiently controlled. The target may be a reference terrestrial solar spectrum, a daylight appearance, a photoperiod, a thermal load, or a biologically effective band; no one source reproduces “the sun” for every purpose.

For photovoltaic testing, solar simulators are qualified by spectral match, spatial nonuniformity across the test plane, and temporal instability. IEC 60904-9 assigns performance classes independently on those axes, making fidelity multidimensional rather than a single “full spectrum” label.

Scope of Application

Applications include photovoltaic device characterization, accelerated weathering, sunscreen and photobiology studies, automotive thermal testing, remote-sensing calibration, plant and aquarium lighting, daylight research, and controlled circadian stimulation. IEC 60904-9 covers indoor terrestrial photovoltaic measurements; ASTM G173 supplies reference terrestrial spectral-irradiance tables used in solar-energy work.

Materials exposure uses different apparatus and dose controls, for example xenon-arc practices under ASTM G155. Medical or therapeutic use requires clinical protocols rather than engineering similarity alone.

Clarity

Name the reference spectrum or natural condition, wavelength range, irradiance, test-plane size, uniformity, stability, angular distribution, exposure schedule, calibration method, and allowed mismatch. Report each fidelity dimension separately. Do not infer biological benefit from visual similarity.

Manages Complexity

The abstraction replaces uncontrollable weather, season, geography, and diurnal variation with a repeatable exposure. A declared fidelity budget prevents overengineering irrelevant dimensions while exposing mismatches capable of biasing the response of a photovoltaic cell, coating, organism, or sensor.
