Aspect Qualifier¶
Attach a controlled modifier from a small closed list to a subject descriptor so the indexed claim names a topic in one specific sense — Aspirin/adverse effects, not aspirin-as-such — factoring topic from aspect to gain precision without vocabulary bloat.
Core Idea¶
An aspect qualifier is a controlled modifier, drawn from a small closed vocabulary, attached to a subject descriptor to narrow which dimension of that descriptor is asserted — not a second topic but the perspective from which the first is treated. MeSH works it out most precisely: ~80 qualifiers (/adverse effects, /therapeutic use, /pharmacokinetics) attach via slash notation to any of ~30,000 descriptors. "Aspirin/adverse effects" encodes aspirin in its adverse-effects aspect; the indexed claim is the descriptor-qualifier pair, not the descriptor alone.
Scope of Application¶
The aspect qualifier lives within descriptive-cataloging and biomedical indexing — wherever a small closed vocabulary of sense-modulators is attached, under scope-note rules, to a large descriptor vocabulary so the indexed claim is the pair.

Clarity¶
The concept makes legible a distinction indexing constantly risks collapsing: adding a second topic versus narrowing the sense of the first. "Aspirin/adverse effects" is one claim, not a conjunction of two topics, and the qualifier has no standing as a retrieval target alone. The question becomes not "what is this about?" but "this descriptor in which aspect?" It also makes the small-qualifier/large-descriptor asymmetry legible as a design choice that absorbs cubic bloat.
Manages Complexity¶
The space a vocabulary must cover is not topics but topics-in-a-given-sense — every drug in its therapeutic use, adverse effects, pharmacokinetics. A flat descriptor set reaches that only by enumerating each pair, a product no maintainer can curate. The aspect qualifier factors the space into two near-independent dimensions — a large descriptor list, a small closed sense list, combined at indexing time — so the maintainer governs two lists plus applicability rules rather than their product, and imprecision is diagnosable along the responsible dimension.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The factored claim supports diagnosis (localize a retrieval imprecision to the responsible dimension — right topic in the wrong sense is a qualifier fault, not a descriptor one; a qualifier recorded as a co-descriptor is a category error), interventionist prediction (attach a qualifier to narrow to one sense; conjoin qualified descriptors to pin each topic; drop one to raise recall), boundary-drawing (new descriptor versus existing qualifier; applicability under scope notes), and factoring at the right grain.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within descriptive cataloging and biomedical indexing the concept transfers as mechanism, factoring and precision diagnostics intact — MeSH subheadings, LCSH subdivisions, and museum role qualifiers are co-instances of one indexing discipline. Beyond it the named mechanism does not travel: the portable content reduces to constraint within a faceted-classification design (Ranganathan), with sense-narrowing a cousin of semantic_narrowing_widening. The ~80-qualifier vocabulary, slash/em-dash syntax, and scope-note rules are cataloging infrastructure that does not survive extraction.
