Aspect Qualifier

Attach a controlled modifier from a small closed list to a subject descriptor so the indexed claim names a topic in one specific sense — Aspirin/adverse effects, not aspirin-as-such — factoring topic from aspect to gain precision without vocabulary bloat.

Core Idea

An aspect qualifier is a controlled modifier, drawn from a small closed vocabulary, attached to a subject descriptor to narrow which dimension of that descriptor is asserted — not a second topic but the perspective from which the first is treated. MeSH works it out most precisely: ~80 qualifiers (/adverse effects, /therapeutic use, /pharmacokinetics) attach via slash notation to any of ~30,000 descriptors. "Aspirin/adverse effects" encodes aspirin in its adverse-effects aspect; the indexed claim is the descriptor-qualifier pair, not the descriptor alone.

Scope of Application

Clarity

The concept makes legible a distinction indexing constantly risks collapsing: adding a second topic versus narrowing the sense of the first. "Aspirin/adverse effects" is one claim, not a conjunction of two topics, and the qualifier has no standing as a retrieval target alone. The question becomes not "what is this about?" but "this descriptor in which aspect?" It also makes the small-qualifier/large-descriptor asymmetry legible as a design choice that absorbs cubic bloat.

Manages Complexity

The space a vocabulary must cover is not topics but topics-in-a-given-sense — every drug in its therapeutic use, adverse effects, pharmacokinetics. A flat descriptor set reaches that only by enumerating each pair, a product no maintainer can curate. The aspect qualifier factors the space into two near-independent dimensions — a large descriptor list, a small closed sense list, combined at indexing time — so the maintainer governs two lists plus applicability rules rather than their product, and imprecision is diagnosable along the responsible dimension.
