Association (ecology)¶
The basic phytosociological vegetation unit defined by a recurring species composition, physiognomy and habitat, commonly named through diagnostic taxa.
Core Idea¶
American usage can be more physiognomic than Braun–Blanquet syntaxonomy, classification depends on sampling and diagnostic thresholds and an association is not merely any ecological interaction. Vegetation plots are inventoried, characteristic and differential species and environmental consistency are compared and recurrent communities are delimited and placed under alliance, order and class. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
