Attentional Bias¶
The systematic tilt in how finite attention is allocated across the perceptual field — pulled by anxiety, reward history, depression, or expertise rather than sensory salience — a property of the perceiver, at perceptual selection, upstream of judgment.
Core Idea¶
Attentional bias is the regularity that human selective attention is non-uniformly allocated across the perceptual field in ways tied to emotional valence, motivational state, anxiety, expertise, or cue history — a tilt in the allocation function, not a uniform filtering by salience. Threat captures anxious perceivers, cues capture the addicted, negative material engages the depressed, diagnostic patterns orient experts. The tilt is largely pre-conscious, and it names the tilt, not the finite bottleneck of capacity.
Scope of Application¶
Attentional bias lives across the cognitive-and-clinical-psychology subfields that study the same human-attention substrate — value-driven capture, salience-network priority, reward-history prediction; its reach stays within that domain.

Clarity¶
Naming attentional bias separates two things "attention" runs together: the bottleneck (finite capacity, about size) and the allocation function (the tilt, about shape). It names the shape. It also inserts a stage downstream accounts skip — the gap between sensory availability and attended availability — so a biased judgment whose input was already skewed is not misread as a reasoning failure, and it keeps the tilt distinct from the stimulus's salience.
Manages Complexity¶
A heap of paradigm-specific findings compresses into one construct: a systematic tilt sourced by valence, anxiety, reward history, or expertise. The analyst carries one variable — the direction and source of the tilt — instead of a catalog. Factoring attention into bottleneck and allocation lets capacity be held fixed while reasoning about shape alone, and inserting one pipeline stage traces a class of downstream distortions back to a single pre-conscious filter.
Abstract Reasoning¶
A diagnostic move reads the tilt's direction and source from capture and traces downstream bias to the pre-filter, locating the bias in the perceiver, not the stimulus. An interventionist move targets the pre-conscious orienting or the field. A boundary-drawing move claims the tilt, not the bottleneck, at selection, not judgment. A predictive move forecasts which stimuli capture which population before testing.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within cognitive and clinical psychology the construct transfers as mechanism across every subfield studying the same human-attention substrate — the tilt-versus-bottleneck factoring, the perceiver-not-stimulus locus, and the intervention class carry intact. Beyond the human-attention substrate it is a boundary case carried by the parents: finite selective capacity by attention / attentional_capacity and systematic directional error by bias. A non-cognitive system that weights inputs is an instance of bias-over-finite-capacity, not attentional bias; calling it so is analogy.
