Attribute Substitution¶
The dual-process mechanism behind a whole family of judgment biases: when a target attribute is hard to assess, the mind unconsciously swaps in an easier, correlated attribute and reports its value — producing a confident but directionally biased answer.
Core Idea¶
Attribute substitution (Kahneman and Frederick, 2002) is the dual-process account of a large family of intuitive judgment errors: asked to evaluate a hard target attribute, a person unconsciously substitutes a more accessible, correlated attribute and reports its value without registering the swap. It unifies representativeness, availability, the affect heuristic, and the planning fallacy — each a hard question silently mapped to an easier one. The swap is System-1 driven and automatic; monitoring that would catch it is absent under load. The resulting errors are directional and predictable, not random.
Scope of Application¶
Attribute substitution lives across judgment-and-decision research and the adjacent fields that import dual-process theory — its substrate the human cognitive architecture.

Clarity¶
Naming attribute substitution makes legible a unity the biases literature had only listed — representativeness, availability, affect, and the planning fallacy become one move in four guises. It hands a researcher a single generative question: what easier attribute is the judge actually evaluating? It sharpens what makes a bias a bias rather than noise — the error is directional and predictable — and separates the mechanism from the dual-process architecture and from the deliberate, knowing proxy of statistics.
Manages Complexity¶
The heuristics-and-biases roster grows without bound, each quirk with its own paradigm. Attribute substitution collapses it onto one mechanism with a single parameter — which attribute gets swapped in — so four entries become one move. It hands the researcher one generative query in place of a memorized list, and its directionality converts "this judgment is unreliable" into a signable prediction. It also fixes the boundaries against the architecture and the deliberate proxy, sparing per-case re-adjudication.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The construct licenses diagnostic surfacing of the substituted attribute and signing the error from the divergence, reading confidence as no guarantee the target was assessed. It grounds interventionist correction — re-posing the target question and supplying a direct evaluation, predicting the shift. It draws three boundaries — operation not architecture, unwitting not deliberate, directional not noise. And it predicts vulnerability, error sign, and the effective fix from which attribute was swapped in.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within judgment research the mechanism transfers cleanly, reaching downward to the biases it generates and outward to fields importing dual-process theory, all on one human-cognition substrate — the generative question, signed-error rule, and re-pose corrective carry intact. Beyond the mind the general pattern (approximate an unmeasurable target by a proxy) is carried by approximation and proxy_measure_and_signaling — but every cross-domain proxy is deliberate and registered, where attribute substitution is defined by being unwitting. That unconscious character does not travel; deliberate substitutions are analogy at best.
