Core Idea

Axial coding is the middle phase of Strauss-and-Corbin grounded theory, in which the fragmented categories produced by open coding are re-linked around an explicit relational paradigm — conditions / phenomenon / context / intervening conditions / action-interaction strategies / consequences. The analyst works each category on its axis, asking that fixed question-set, so isolated codes become structured clusters and the flat list becomes a relational map that prepares selective coding.

Axial coding lives within the grounded-theory tradition of qualitative analysis; as a named procedure its reach is bounded to disciplines that adopt that workflow.

Axial coding makes legible the gap between having codes and having a theory. Naming it as its own phase, with its own move, dissolves analyst-paralysis: instead of staring at a flat code list, the analyst poses the paradigm's scaffolded questions of each category and lifts attention from item-level coding to relational-level coding.

Manages Complexity

After open coding the analyst faces dozens of atomised categories and a combinatorially vast space of possible relations. Axial coding replaces the open question "how do all these relate?" with a small fixed paradigm applied one category at a time, tracking six relational slots per category and collapsing the flat list into a few navigable category-with-relations clusters.

Abstract Reasoning

The concept licenses an interventionist move (run the paradigm against a category to manufacture relational vocabulary), a diagnostic read (the category densest in conditions and consequences becomes the theoretical core), and boundary-drawing that separates sorting from relating and makes the overfitting hazard — imposed versus intrinsic structure — an askable question.
