Bar-line shift¶
A jazz improvisation technique that displaces the perceived harmonic change across the notated measure boundary.
Core Idea¶
A bar-line shift anticipates a coming chord or prolongs a preceding chord so the improvised harmonic phrase crosses the written bar line before realigning. Chord tones, guide tones, and voice-leading establish an alternate local harmonic timing against the rhythm section’s metric and progression reference. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
