Clarity

Naming the effect pries apart the actual specificity of a description — how narrow a population it picks out — from the felt personal accuracy of it. The trap is that these feel identical, because the narrowing was done privately. With the label, "that's so me" is recognized as exactly the sensation a non-diagnostic statement predicts, and the fuzzy "does this describe me?" becomes a checkable question about discriminant specificity.

Manages Complexity

Astrology, cold reading, personality-test feedback, and "uniquely yours" copy form a long list that could each be studied separately. The effect compresses it to one ratio the reader never computes: actual discriminant specificity against the private narrowing the reader supplies.
