Bentley's paradox¶
The instability of a static Newtonian universe uniformly filled with mutually gravitating matter.

An infinite or very large homogeneous stellar distribution does not yield a stable static configuration under unmodified Newtonian attraction: perturbations or finite regions tend toward gravitational collapse and naive force sums are ill posed. Long-range attraction lacks a balancing homogeneous equilibrium and boundary-independent summation, exposing tension between Newtonian gravity and a static eternal cosmos.
