Biblical literalism¶
An interpretive orientation giving priority to the Bible's plain, direct, or historically referential sense while differing internally over genre, figurative language, history, science, and doctrinal authority.
Core Idea¶
Biblical literalism ranges from historical-grammatical interpretation to stronger inerrantist or letter-focused positions and must be situated by tradition, text, translation, genre, and the interpreter's account of authorial intention. An interpreter treats the wording as referentially authoritative, identifies a plain or intended sense through declared linguistic and historical rules, and constrains figurative readings by genre and doctrinal commitments. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
