Biocultural diversity¶
The interrelated variation of biological life, cultural practices and languages within socioecological systems and across places and histories.
Core Idea¶
The concept treats species, ecosystems, knowledge, livelihoods, institutions and language as dynamically linked rather than as independent diversity inventories, while causal and normative claims require local evidence. Communities interact with environments through knowledge, naming, management and livelihood practices; ecological change and cultural or linguistic change feed back on one another over time. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Biocultural diversity belongs to biocultural conservation and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed biocultural conservation carrier, defining objects and relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundary cases, and comparison targets, then evaluate the place and period, biological, cultural and linguistic dimensions, communities and governance, proposed interactions, indicators, scale, historical change, evidence and rights implications are explicit. Clarity¶

A claim should name the carrier, the governing operation or relation, the applicable assumptions, and the recognition test. Manages Complexity¶
