Bracket¶
A paired punctuation or mathematical delimiter that encloses, groups or qualifies a segment and whose shape and naming conventions vary across languages and disciplines.
Core Idea¶
A bracket is one member of a matched delimiter pair used to mark a segment's boundary or structural role. The opening mark pushes a grouping context and the corresponding closing mark terminates it, enabling nesting and parsing in prose, mathematics and code. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of notation. It is paired visual boundary notation spanning textual and formal grouping.
