Semiotics¶

5 domain-specific abstractions whose origin domain is Semiotics.

Character (symbol) — A discrete written or typographic sign—such as a letter, digit, ideogram or punctuation mark—recognized as one unit within a notational system despite variation in its glyphs.
Commutation test — A semiotic substitution test that identifies meaningful sign contrasts by changing one signifier and observing whether the signified or system value changes.
Esthesic and poietic — A semiotic distinction between the processes and analyses of producing a symbolic form and those of perceiving or interpreting it.
Interpretant — In Peircean semiotics, the mediating sign-effect through which a representamen is understood as standing for an object, itself capable of functioning as a further sign.
Sign — An entity, event or form that stands for, indicates or conveys something else to an interpreter through causal connection, resemblance or convention.
