Cadastre¶
Link identified land parcels to their mapped extent and parcel-keyed records so land information can be retrieved by place.
Core Idea¶
A cadastre, in the parcel-indexed sense used here, links a defined land unit to both a spatial depiction and a record of attributes or interests. A parcel reference lets a reader find the unit on a cadastral map or chart and retrieve information recorded for that same unit. The fields and their legal effect vary by jurisdiction. Portugal's former rural-property geometric cadastre linked mapped properties to a fiscal matrix; the Dutch BRK links mapped cadastral parcels to an administrative rights and person summary.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-d272c7b6427c][ref-d1051abb8ec8][ref-50e0ec32c45c][^ref-87a891579b75]
The key and map are an organizing relation, not a guarantee that all land is covered, every boundary is settled, every entry is current, or the named person holds conclusive title. This definition is limited to the documented parcel-to-map-and-record pattern, not every artifact historically called a cadastre.[ref-8855b6ef4ea9][ref-43c0fa1dbd28]
Scope of Application¶
Use this entry for a land-information system that identifies a parcel or comparable bounded property, maps its extent or location, and joins selected attributes to that same unit through a reference. The record may serve taxation, rights lookup or another land-administration purpose. Its purpose determines which fields matter and what they can establish.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-d1051abb8ec8][^ref-50e0ec32c45c]
The Portuguese CGPR is a historical fiscal example: DGT says its rural-property system was converted to a newer regime on 21 November 2023. The Dutch BRK is a current parcel-facing summary; its underlying filed instruments reside in separate Public Registers. The examples do not have identical field content or legal force.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-87a891579b75][^ref-43c0fa1dbd28]
Clarity¶
Ask what land unit is named, how it is located, which record is joined to it, and what authority that record has. A mapped outline alone lacks the parcel-keyed attribute join. A person-centered tax list without a resolvable mapped land unit lacks the spatial side. A record may support a fiscal query while being insufficient to establish ownership.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-d1051abb8ec8][^ref-43c0fa1dbd28]
The parcel designation is a reference, not proof of perfect coverage. DGT notes some formerly surveyed Portuguese properties that could not be exactly located and were deferred from its viewer. Kadaster warns that the BRK overview does not itself have conclusive legal effect.[ref-8855b6ef4ea9][ref-43c0fa1dbd28]
Manages Complexity¶
Survey drawings, tax records, cadastral summaries and filed deeds can sit in different places. The cadastre gives a retrieval path: start with a land unit, follow its parcel reference to the spatial depiction, then inspect the joined fields for the task. In the Portuguese example, administrative location and property number connect the viewer to the fiscal matrix. In the Dutch example, a cadastral designation connects map information and BRK data while the Public Registers retain the instruments.[ref-8855b6ef4ea9][ref-50e0ec32c45c][^ref-87a891579b75]
The live Representation Prime is the strict parent: the land unit is the target, and the chart plus joined entry is its medium. The mapping preserves selected location and attribute information under declared survey and administrative limits. Representation can occur without land parcels; this cadastre identity adds a parcel key and land-specific geometry-to-record join.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-50e0ec32c45c]
Abstract Reasoning¶
If a land-tax file supplies a property number but no way to find the mapped property, do not infer this parcel-indexed relation from the number alone. If a cadastral section and a matching entry refer to the same property, ask what the linked field measures before using it. An assessment, description and legal-right summary answer different questions.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-d1051abb8ec8]
If a Dutch BRK entry names a person against a mapped parcel, the map and record help identify the unit and its summarized information. To investigate conclusive ownership, consult the underlying Public Registers and applicable law; the cadastral overview alone does not settle that question.[ref-50e0ec32c45c][ref-87a891579b75][^ref-43c0fa1dbd28]
Knowledge Transfer¶
Carry the role test from Portugal's historical fiscal system to the Dutch rights-summary system: land unit, reference, spatial depiction, linked record, use and update convention. Rebuild the actual fields and their authority for each jurisdiction. A fiscal matrix cannot be read as if it were a deed register, and a current rights summary cannot be assumed perfectly complete.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-d1051abb8ec8][ref-50e0ec32c45c][ref-43c0fa1dbd28]
The transferable representational operation is broader than land administration. The named cadastre remains domain-specific because its distinctive target and join are parcels and land records; an unrelated database key and map are not enough to make a cadastre.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-50e0ec32c45c]
Example¶
Portugal's former rural-property geometric cadastre. Before its 2023 conversion, the CGPR used cadastral sections and a reference combining administrative area and article or property number. That reference connected the mapped rural property to the fiscal cadastral matrix. The mapping supports fiscal retrieval, while DGT's sources do not establish perfect coverage or title force for every record.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-d272c7b6427c][ref-d1051abb8ec8][ref-8855b6ef4ea9]
Dutch BRK and cadastral map. Kadaster shows parcel designations and boundaries on its map and summarizes cadastral area, rights and person information in BRK. Filed notarial instruments are in separate Public Registers. The parcel key joins the spatial and administrative views; the summary itself is not conclusive legal title.[ref-50e0ec32c45c][ref-87a891579b75][^ref-43c0fa1dbd28]

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Cadastre sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (75th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.

Not to Be Confused With¶
A map alone shows spatial features without the required joined parcel record. A tax roll by person can record assessments without a map-resolvable parcel. A deed register contains underlying instruments rather than the same parcel-facing summary. A title guarantee is stronger than the documented cadastral relation. These can interact with a cadastre, but they are not identical to this narrowed identity.[ref-ff1c86d22517][ref-d1051abb8ec8][ref-87a891579b75][ref-43c0fa1dbd28]
