Capability Maturity Model¶
A staged process-improvement model that assesses organizational software practice from ad hoc execution through defined, measured and continuously optimizing control.
Core Idea¶
The original SW-CMM is historically specific and largely superseded by CMMI, maturity levels summarize institutionalized process capability rather than product quality, and an organization cannot infer a level from isolated best practices. Process areas supply goals and institutionalization practices; evidence is assessed across them, gaps guide improvement and staged achievement moves the organization from repeatable control toward quantitative management and optimization. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Capability Maturity Model belongs to software process management and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed software process management carrier, including objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundaries, and comparison targets, then evaluate the organization and assessment scope, five maturity levels and their ordering, key process areas or goals, institutionalization and evidence criteria, appraisal method, current and target level, improvement actions, measurement feedback, distinction between process maturity and output performance and relationship to CMMI are explicit.
Clarity¶
The abstraction clarifies a crowded vocabulary by making the organization and assessment scope, five maturity levels and their ordering, key process areas or goals, institutionalization and evidence criteria, appraisal method, current and target level, improvement actions, measurement feedback, distinction between process maturity and output performance and relationship to CMMI are explicit the center of the account. A claim should name the carrier, the governing operation or relation, the applicable assumptions, and the recognition test.
Manages Complexity¶
Without the abstraction, an analyst must reason directly over many local details: the carrier roles, admissibility assumptions, competing conventions, derived invariants, boundary cases, and proof or validation obligations specific to Capability Maturity Model. Capability Maturity Model compresses them into the roles in the structural signature. That compression permits comparison across instances without erasing the variables that determine validity. It also exposes which details may be varied safely and which are constitutive.
