Clarity¶
Naming the drift reframes an apparent change in disease as a possible change in the measuring instrument. Without the label, a rising curve is read as biology or behavior; with it, the analyst must ask, before any causal story, whether the definition shifted, where, and how its magnitude compares to the observed move. It decomposes a series into real signal versus a definitional-boundary function, and sharpens drift against Goodhart distortion, selection bias, and threshold-shift forms.
Manages Complexity¶
Surveillance data has a long catalogue of pathologies — code revisions, template changes, threshold resets, assay upgrades — each able to bend a trend. Drift collapses that catalogue into one diagnosis: observed series equals real signal plus a definitional-boundary function plus noise, every item entering through the same middle term. The analyst tracks one thing — the definition history against the observed move — and reaches a fixed bridging toolkit regardless of which item caused it.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept's master move is compositional decomposition run before any causal story — asking which term moved. It grounds a diagnostic discrimination of real change versus instrument change, with predictive teeth in both directions: broadened definitions inflate, tightened ones deflate and can mask worsening.
