Causal Map¶
A causal map draws attributed claims about how factors influence one another as a directed network, without treating those claims as proven effects.
Core Idea¶
A causal map draws factors as nodes and attributed claims of causal influence as directed arrows. It makes a person's or group's causal understanding inspectable, but an arrow records what is asserted—not necessarily a proven effect.[^ref-ea1afd31e198]
Scope of Application¶
Axelrod's British Eastern Committee maps came from coded transcripts, while Roberts's commuter-transport map drew consensus link judgments from an expert panel. Hart compared estimates of ocean-regime actor maps with panel consensus. Eden later used stakeholder-owned material in strategy workshops. These are different provenance routes; a combined map must not erase who asserted which link or be mistaken for causal validation.[ref-ea1afd31e198][ref-68a80411f7f1]
Clarity¶
Specify each factor, what an arrow means, whose claim it is and how it was coded. A causal map need not be acyclic or quantitative. A causal loop diagram is a narrower signed-feedback notation.
Manages Complexity¶
The graph compresses many causal statements into comparable paths. That gain costs nuance if speaker hedges, coding choices or actor disagreement are erased; preserving full utterances alone, however, makes structural comparison difficult.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Extract claims, encode their direction, retain attribution, inspect paths or loops as implications of the claims, and seek independent evidence before treating any edge as an actual causal effect.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The representation works across policy and management settings. Graph position, consensus or a drawn path does not by itself establish causal strength or intervention impact. Prime Network is a strict structural parent for the nodes and links, not a source of warrant for the asserted causes.
