Core Idea

The central executive network is a distributed frontoparietal brain network that supports externally directed, goal-maintaining cognition. It coordinates working-memory contents, task rules, top-down attention, response selection, and flexible adjustment when demands change. Its identity is functional and relational: no single region is "the executive"; executive control emerges from coordinated activity and changing coupling among network nodes.

The abstraction is specific to systems and clinical neuroscience. Terms such as an organization's "executive network" are analogies whose portable content belongs to Network and Attention.
