Chicken Game¶
A two-player payoff structure (DC > CC > CD > DD) where each side prefers the other to yield and mutual non-yielding is catastrophic but off-path, so the strategic question is not what to play but which asymmetric equilibrium gets selected — resolved by whoever can most credibly and irreversibly commit first.
Core Idea¶
The chicken game is a two-player payoff structure in which each side prefers the other yield, mutual yielding is acceptable, and mutual non-yielding is catastrophic — formally DC > CC > CD > DD. This produces two asymmetric pure-strategy equilibria, neither dominant, so the strategic question is not what to play but which equilibrium gets selected, and the answer turns on commitment. Because the catastrophe is off-path but ruinous, each player wants to visibly and irreversibly remove their own option to yield first, forcing the other to swerve.

The chicken game lives across the applied wings of game theory; its reach is the set of standoffs whose payoff table genuinely carries the ordering DC > CC > CD > DD with the catastrophe off-path.

Clarity¶
Naming a standoff as chicken converts a clash of temperaments into a question about payoff topology and equilibrium selection. The decisive move separates chicken from the prisoner's dilemma: in the dilemma mutual defection is the equilibrium; in chicken mutual non-yielding is off-path, a catastrophe both steer to avoid. So "stubbornness" stops being an explanation and becomes strategic content — a player removing their option to yield is selecting the equilibrium in which the other swerves.
Manages Complexity¶
Brinkmanship crises, strikes, price wars, and hostage standoffs arrive as a sprawl of unrelated disputes. Recognizing the chicken structure collapses them to one object: the ordering DC > CC > CD > DD.
