Classical conditioning¶
Learning in which a previously neutral cue acquires the capacity to elicit a response after predictive pairing with a biologically or motivationally significant event.
Core Idea¶
Modern accounts distinguish contingency from mere contiguity and model acquisition, extinction, generalization, blocking, latent inhibition and context effects; conditioned responses need not duplicate unconditioned responses. The learner updates an association or prediction error when a cue changes expectation of the outcome, and repeated predictive experience makes the cue evoke anticipatory behavioral, physiological or evaluative responses. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
