Clock Gable¶
A Dutch-derived facade-top type recognized by an integrated bell-like curved silhouette—not by a literal clock—whose profile supports architectural classification, comparison, and conservation across changing ornament.
Core Idea¶
A Clock Gable is the architectural type called klokgevel in Dutch: a front gable or shaped facade termination whose integrated outer contour resembles the longitudinal section or outline of a bell. “Clock” here translates Dutch klok, which can mean bell; it does not mean that the facade contains a timepiece. The official Dutch ANW dictionary classifies klokgevel under facade forms and defines it by the rounded, bell-like top of the building front. The historical WNT likewise locates the identity in the shaped upper facade.
Scope of Application¶
The primary scope is architectural morphology and typology in the Netherlands, especially urban facade history of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. ANW dates the term’s architectural emergence to about 1660 and reports use into the late eighteenth century; WNT historical citations describe frequent eighteenth-century use and recurring curved sides, crowning treatment, and ornament. These dates characterize the main historical series, not an exclusion rule for revivals or later reconstructions.
Clarity¶
A reliable field procedure begins with the outer contour, not the decoration or the building’s advertised style. First identify the front-facing shaped termination. Then trace both sides from the roof or facade shoulders toward the crown. Ask whether the curves and crown compose one bell-like figure. Next compare the center and shoulders: a visibly separate rectangular neck with attached volutes favors neck gable; stair steps favor stepped gable; straight raking sides favor triangular gable.
Manages Complexity¶
Clock Gable compresses a visually diverse building set into a stable comparison class. Rather than treating every crown, scroll, garland, and window surround as unrelated, an analyst holds the whole-outline invariant fixed and records decoration, date, material, and alteration as variables. That separation makes heritage inventories searchable and lets surveys compare streets or periods without assuming that every detail shares one origin.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The type licenses limited, defeasible inferences:
- If the outer shoulders and crown form an integrated bell-like profile, clock-gable classification is supported even when ornament is absent. 2. If a literal clock is present but the profile is triangular or stepped, the timepiece does not support clock-gable classification. 3. If an upright neck remains sharply distinct from flanking claw pieces, neck-gable classification is normally stronger.
