Coltrane Changes¶
A jazz-harmonic three-tonic system that cycles among major-third-related key centers and locally confirms them with dominant or ii–V motion, either as a complete form or as a reharmonization matrix.
Core Idea¶
Coltrane Changes are a jazz-harmonic system that divides the twelve-semitone octave into three equal major-third spans, treats the resulting pitch classes as tonic centers, and connects or locally confirms those centers with dominant-function or ii–V motion. The three tonics form an augmented-triad set: beginning on B gives B, G, and E♭ under descending-major-third motion before returning to B. John Coltrane made this cycle structurally explicit in “Giant Steps” and used it as a reharmonization matrix in “Countdown.”
The abstraction is a family of progression-generating rules, not the chord chart of one composition. In a complete multi-tonic form, the cycle supplies the work's large harmonic architecture.
Scope of Application¶
The node belongs to jazz composition, analysis, reharmonization, arranging, and improvisation. It explains original forms built from the three-tonic matrix; substitutions imposed on standards or ii–V–I chains; practice exercises that transpose cells through the cycle; and melodic strategies for navigating rapid distant centers. The identity is not restricted to Coltrane's own performances. The term became a standard analytic and pedagogical label for a reusable harmonic practice.
Clarity¶
A compact recognition test has three questions.
Tonic-set test: do the locally confirmed tonics form one augmented-triad set, four semitones apart? Cadence test: are the nominal centers functionally articulated by dominants or ii–V cells rather than appearing as unconfirmed chords? architecture test: does the ordered cycle organize a form or systematically replace a passage while reconnecting to a target?
Manages Complexity¶
Without the abstraction, a fast chart can look like an arbitrary pile of unrelated chords. The matrix compresses it to three tonic poles plus a small set of cadential connectors. Instead of memorizing every symbol independently, the performer asks: which tonic pole is active, what function approaches it, and where does the cycle reconnect?
Abstract Reasoning¶
Several deductions follow from the identity.
Closure after three steps. In twelve-tone equal temperament, repeatedly adding four semitones produces a three-element orbit: (p, p+4, p+8, p+12=p). The tonic set is therefore transpositionally symmetric and spells an augmented triad.
Limited tonic inventory, high surface rate. Rapid changes need not imply many distinct centers.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within jazz, the mechanism transfers exactly from analysis to composition, arranging, and improvisation. The analyst identifies tonic poles and connectors; the composer generates or substitutes them; the improviser tracks and voices them. It also transfers between keys by uniform transposition and between pieces when the same matrix occupies different formal durations.
To other tonal music, equal division and chromatic-third cycles can be compared as genuine harmonic relatives, but the label should not erase historical and stylistic differences.
