Common Fate¶
Group visual elements that change together — moving, flickering, or co-varying synchronously — into one perceived object, on the inference that things sharing a fate usually share an origin.
Core Idea¶
Common fate is the Gestalt grouping principle, first stated by Max Wertheimer, that visual elements changing together — moving in the same direction at the same velocity, or co-varying in flicker, brightness, or color — are perceived as one object, even when they differ in shape, color, or position. The visual system treats shared change as ecologically grounded evidence of common origin, pre-attentively and with priority over conflicting static cues.
Scope of Application¶
Common fate lives across vision science and the visual-design practices that exploit it, extending to other change-sensitive modalities; its reach is within a system with motion- and change-sensitive machinery.

Clarity¶
Naming common fate gives the grouping problem a dynamic cue alongside the static ones, sharp where it is most apt to be missed: it reads grouping off shared change over time and so is invisible in any single still frame. It makes the conflict question precise — not "are these grouped?" but "which cue wins?" — with the answer that shared change typically dominates conflicting proximity and similarity.
Manages Complexity¶
Scene segmentation is combinatorially underdetermined, and static cues frequently disagree. Common fate collapses this to one variable — whether temporal co-variation agrees across elements — from which the group boundary falls out, with cue conflict resolved by a near-fixed ordering. It yields a clean design lever: synchronize motion to bind, desynchronize to split.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept supports a diagnostic move — inferring common origin from shared change, reading a segmentation static cues cannot — an interventionist move — synchronizing or desynchronizing to bind or split — and an order-of-events prediction — that grouping appears at the onset of synchronized change, which is why motion breaks camouflage stillness preserved.
Knowledge Transfer¶
