Commuting zone¶
A county-based geographic aggregation approximating a self-contained local labor market from observed home-to-work commuting flows.
Core Idea¶
Versions differ by census year and clustering method, boundaries can include rural areas and the zone is analytical rather than an administrative jurisdiction. Counties with strong reciprocal commuting are clustered until within-zone labor flows dominate cross-zone flows, producing exhaustive regions for employment and population analysis. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of regional economics.
