Comoving and proper distances¶
A scale-factor relation between comoving separation and proper spatial separation at a specified cosmic time.
Core Idea¶
In an expanding FLRW cosmology, comoving distance describes a separation using coordinates that factor out the universe's homogeneous expansion. Proper distance is the physical separation along the matching spatial path at a specified cosmic time. The two are related by D_proper(t) = a(t) D_comoving(t), with a(t) the scale factor at that time.[ref-b339df8e842a][ref-fee2f3a1ccde]
For two objects following only the Hubble flow, comoving separation remains fixed while proper separation changes with a(t). Objects with peculiar motion can also move across the comoving grid.[ref-b339df8e842a][ref-fee2f3a1ccde] In the common convention a(t₀)=1, the two distances have the same numerical value today; that is a choice of normalization.[^ref-b339df8e842a]
Scope of Application¶
In radial cosmography, a chosen FLRW model can turn an observed redshift into a line-of-sight comoving distance D_C. A separate choice of cosmic-time slice then lets one state the corresponding radial proper spatial separation. Hogg presents this as an explanatory model calculation, not as a new observed distance measurement.[^ref-b339df8e842a]
In cosmological simulations, particle positions may be stored in comoving coordinates while the scale factor tracks background expansion. GADGET-2 uses this representation, and pkdgrav3 explicitly relates physical and comoving positions through a(t) while separating expansion from peculiar velocity.[ref-91f9b91d93ab][ref-fee2f3a1ccde]
Clarity¶
Ask first: Are these distances for the same spatial path at the same cosmic time? The scale-factor equation relates that matched pair. Light received from a distant source follows a light cone; it is not itself the simultaneous proper path.[^ref-b339df8e842a]
Ask second which comoving distance is meant. Hogg distinguishes radial D_C from transverse D_M, and spatial curvature can make them differ.[^ref-b339df8e842a] Neither may be silently replaced by an angular-diameter or luminosity distance. Peculiar motion also means a simulation particle pair's comoving separation need not stay fixed between epochs.[^ref-fee2f3a1ccde]
Manages Complexity¶
For a Hubble-flow pair, one can keep its comoving separation and use a(t) to state its physical length at a chosen epoch, instead of treating every epoch as a new independent distance.[^ref-b339df8e842a] Simulations likewise represent evolving particles on a comoving grid while the expansion factor enters their physical-coordinate relation.[ref-91f9b91d93ab][ref-fee2f3a1ccde]
This economy depends on keeping the model, time slice, path, and coordinate convention aligned. It does not remove the need for an expansion model when a comoving distance is inferred from redshift, or for particle trajectories when peculiar motion matters.[ref-b339df8e842a][ref-fee2f3a1ccde]
Abstract Reasoning¶
To use the relation, identify the comoving separation, specify the epoch, and confirm that the proper distance follows the same spatial path. Then multiply by the scale factor at that epoch. If the comoving value came from a redshift integral, distinguish that model-based light-cone inference from the later same-time spatial conversion.[^ref-b339df8e842a]
This check catches two common errors: assuming a moving particle pair keeps a fixed comoving separation, and substituting transverse D_M for radial D_C in a curved model.[ref-b339df8e842a][ref-fee2f3a1ccde]
Knowledge Transfer¶
The relation works in unlike cosmology tasks: Hogg's author-written radial distance calculation and particle-coordinate simulation methods.[ref-b339df8e842a][ref-91f9b91d93ab][^ref-fee2f3a1ccde] What transfers is the distinction between comoving labels, expansion scale, and physical separation at an epoch. Redshift inference belongs to the first task; particle dynamics belongs to the second.
The two distances are instances of the broader Distance pattern, and the context-explicit scale-factor rule is a Function Mapping from one to the other. The named comoving/proper pair still requires FLRW cosmological geometry and time. Its two uses here do not establish a cross-domain Prime.
Example¶
Worked radial distance calculation. Hogg shows how a chosen FLRW model yields radial comoving D_C from redshift.[^ref-b339df8e842a] The model-inferred D_C is the comoving role. A chosen time slice and radial spatial path set the comparison; a(t) supplies the conversion; the result is the corresponding proper separation on that slice. The received light and the same-time spatial path remain different objects.
Particle simulation. GADGET-2 evolves comoving particle coordinates; pkdgrav3 explicitly states that physical position is a(t) times comoving position.[ref-91f9b91d93ab][ref-fee2f3a1ccde] A simulation time slice and matching particle-position difference define the path and comoving separation; the simulation's a(t) converts it to physical separation. Peculiar motion can change the comoving difference at a later time.[^ref-fee2f3a1ccde]

Not to Be Confused With¶
- Light-travel distance: light propagates between different-time events, while the proper distance here is on one chosen cosmic-time slice.[^ref-b339df8e842a]
- Transverse D_M in place of radial D_C: curvature can distinguish them.[^ref-b339df8e842a]
- Angular-diameter or luminosity distance: each is an observational measure with its own definition.[^ref-b339df8e842a]
- Peculiar velocity: motion relative to the comoving grid, rather than the scale-factor conversion itself.[^ref-fee2f3a1ccde]
- A mandatory present-day equality: a(t₀)=1 is a normalization convention.[^ref-b339df8e842a]
