Conservation of resources theory¶
A stress theory proposing that people seek to obtain, retain and protect valued resources and experience stress when loss is threatened, occurs or follows unrewarded investment.
Core Idea¶
Resources include objects, conditions, personal characteristics and energies, but their value is culturally and contextually situated; loss spirals and gain spirals operate asymmetrically. Initial resource loss reduces capacity to prevent further loss, prompting protective or investment behavior, while resource-rich actors can invest surpluses to build reinforcing gain cycles. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
