Consonance¶
The perceptual stability of simultaneously sounding pitches whose low-integer frequency ratios let their partials reinforce rather than beat — split into a fixed sensory layer set by acoustics and a negotiable functional layer set by a style's grammar.
Core Idea¶
Consonance is the perceptual quality of stability and rest that certain simultaneous pitches produce — the sense they belong together and need no further motion. Its basis is acoustic: tones in low-integer ratios (2:1 octave, 3:2 fifth, 5:4 major third) have partials that coincide and reinforce rather than clash. Its converse, dissonance, names instability demanding resolution. The opposition is tonal music's organising tension; the authentic cadence, resolving a dominant-seventh's tritone into the tonic, is its paradigm enactment.

Clarity¶
Naming consonance gives the analyst a specific thing to hear for — harmonic rest answering an active demand, not diffuse pleasantness — making tonal tension architecture legible. Its chief move forces apart sensory consonance (partial alignment fixed by ratio and critical band) from functional consonance (status within a grammar), resolving the paradox of a sensorily dissonant tritone that is a stable, intended dominant-seventh component. The variable part is thus located: cochlear basis fixed, grammatical assignment negotiable.
Manages Complexity¶
A tonal passage is a long succession of distinct sonorities. The consonance/dissonance opposition compresses it to one tracked variable — harmonic tension between two poles — so the passage reads as demand-and-fulfilment cycles regardless of surface detail, the structural events being the arrivals. Reliability comes from splitting the variable into two layered parameters that must not be conflated: a comparatively fixed sensory layer and a negotiable functional layer, off which the branch structure follows.
