Convergence (economics)¶
The hypothesis or observed tendency for initially poorer economies to grow faster than richer ones and thereby narrow differences in per-capita income or productivity.
Core Idea¶
Absolute beta convergence assumes common steady states, conditional beta convergence controls for structural differences, and sigma convergence requires cross-economy dispersion to fall; one does not automatically imply every other form. Diminishing returns make capital deepening yield larger marginal gains where capital per worker is low, while technology diffusion and institutional catch-up can reinforce or obstruct movement toward economy-specific steady states. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
