Corelli cadence¶
A clash cadence in which an anticipated tonic sounds against a leading tone or supertonic immediately before resolution, producing a characteristic major- or minor-second dissonance.
Core Idea¶
The sonority is associated with Corelli's school but predates him; it arises from independent voice-leading and anticipation practices rather than functioning as an autonomous chord progression. One voice anticipates or sustains the tonic while another approaches the cadence through the leading tone or supertonic; the temporary second resolves as the voices complete the cadence.
