Corotation Electric Field¶
An electric field associated with a rotating magnetized conductor and corotating charged region, with its ideal field relation limited by frame and operating conditions.
Core Idea¶
A corotation electric field is an electric field associated with a rotating magnetized conducting body and a region of charged matter that participates in its rotation. The frame and region matter. In an ideal corotating region, the electric field seen from a nonrotating frame satisfies \(\mathbf{E}+\mathbf{u}\times\mathbf{B}=0\) in SI units, where \(\mathbf{u}=\boldsymbol{\Omega}\times\mathbf{r}\). That simple relation is limited to the specified conditions; the complete field elsewhere may depend on redistributed charge, induction and boundaries.[ref-c8b6bb8be3d2][ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
Earth's closed-line plasmasphere and a modeled aligned neutron-star magnetosphere illustrate the same pattern with very different conductors, magnetic fields and boundaries. Swarm measured geomagnetic input for an Earth field model; the neutron-star example is a theoretical model, not a direct electric-field measurement.[ref-c8b6bb8be3d2][ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
Scope of Application¶
Use the term when rotation, a magnetic field and a conducting or charge-bearing response establish a field configuration in a stated frame. Maus models the conducting Earth, an insulating atmospheric gap, the conducting ionospheric E region and a closed-line corotating plasmasphere. Goldreich and Julian model an aligned magnetic neutron star, with average corotation of charges on closed lines inside the light cylinder.[ref-c8b6bb8be3d2][ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
The SI expression \(\mathbf{E}=-(\boldsymbol{\Omega}\times\mathbf{r})\times\mathbf{B}\) is an ideal bounded relation. Goldreich and Julian's Gaussian-unit equation includes \(1/c\). Field magnitude also depends on the angle between rotational velocity and \(\mathbf{B}\), not just distance from the rotation axis. No universal outward increase follows without a specified magnetic geometry.[ref-c8b6bb8be3d2][ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
Clarity¶
First ask which frame and which field. In the Earth model, a primary rotation-linked contribution, a secondary field of induced charges, and an induction term in a nonaxisymmetric description must be distinguished. Within Maus's assumed closed-line corotating plasmasphere, their combined inertial field reduces to \(-\mathbf{u}\times\mathbf{B}\), even for the treated nonaxisymmetric field. That does not extend the result to every surrounding region.[^ref-c8b6bb8be3d2]
Next ask what was observed. Swarm supplied the magnetic field used to derive the Earth electric-field model.[^ref-c8b6bb8be3d2] A Voyager report of near-corotating plasma motion in Jupiter's inner Io torus is a motion measurement.[^ref-5176f64e89eb] Neither directly determines a full corotation electric-field vector.
Manages Complexity¶
Break the problem into four roles: a rotating magnetized conductor, a specified magnetic region, charges or conducting matter that respond, and a frame-qualified electric-field relation. Check those before adding plasma drift or an external potential. The ideal equation alone cannot replace a global field solution.
In one Earth event, Goldstein and colleagues found that a corotation-plus-convection model missed a dusk plasmapause feature until a subauroral polarization-stream potential was added.[^ref-5cceffaa1de6] This competing convection is an application-specific effect, not a necessary role in the corotation field itself.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Name the source rotation, magnetic field, frame and unit system. Use the SI ideal relation only in a justified corotating region; retain the Gaussian \(1/c\) factor when reading Goldreich and Julian.[ref-c8b6bb8be3d2][ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
- Identify the conducting or charged response and the boundary over which the field relation holds. Do not imagine magnetic field lines as material strings dragged by the body.[^ref-c8b6bb8be3d2]
- Separate the physical field from inferred plasma motion. In the aligned-star model, closed-line charges corotate on average inside the light cylinder, while open-line charges can escape.[^ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
- Keep model corrections. Maus withdrew the earlier claim that geomagnetic nonaxisymmetry alone explains observed plasmasphere underrotation.[^ref-c8b6bb8be3d2]
Knowledge Transfer¶
Earth and the aligned neutron star share the four roles, but not their numbers or boundaries. Earth's ionosphere and closed plasmasphere are different from the star's charge-bearing closed-field magnetosphere. Earth field values are derived from a geomagnetic model; the star's corotating-zone relations are theoretical and written in Gaussian units.[ref-c8b6bb8be3d2][ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
Jupiter's Io-torus velocities offer an additional caution: the original Voyager abstract reports inner-torus near-corotation and some outer lag.[^ref-5176f64e89eb] Speed alone cannot prove a particular complete electric field.
Example¶
Earth. A rotating conducting Earth and its measured geomagnetic field supply the source and magnetic structure. Induced charges and the ionospheric/plasmaspheric response establish the modeled corotating region. The primary and secondary contributions must be combined to obtain the bounded inertial-field relation; outside the modeled region, other fields and boundaries matter.[^ref-c8b6bb8be3d2]
Mapped back: Maus's Earth model specifies rotation, magnetic geometry, charged response and an inertial-frame field.[^ref-c8b6bb8be3d2] A solar-wind convection field may alter the plasmapause.[^ref-5cceffaa1de6] That external effect is not needed to define corotation.
Aligned neutron star. Goldreich and Julian assume a conducting star with aligned rotation and magnetic axes. Their closed-line magnetosphere has charges that corotate on average inside the light cylinder. The interior equation uses Gaussian \(1/c\), and the open-line region is different. This is a theoretical positive case, not an electric-field observation.[^ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
Mapped back: the same four roles appear in a different stellar conductor and charged region. The Earth atmosphere, Io matter and an Earth-style plasmapause are not necessary.
Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Corotation Electric Field sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (97th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.

Not to Be Confused With¶
- Every electric field near a rotating magnet: a vacuum exterior or unrelated field does not automatically satisfy the admitted screened, frame-qualified relation.[ref-c8b6bb8be3d2][ref-b7aadfa3a59e]
- Solar-wind convection: it can compete with Earth corotation without being the rotation-linked field.[^ref-5cceffaa1de6]
- Perfect rotation of all plasma: real motion can lag, and the aligned-star model separates closed-line corotation from open-line escape.[ref-c8b6bb8be3d2][ref-b7aadfa3a59e][^ref-5176f64e89eb]
- Field (physics): a broad field genus; its current inherited measurement obligations are not needed to specify the theoretical aligned-star field.
