Canonical

The newspaper correction is the emblem, and one famous instance shows the mechanism whole. In a 1920 editorial The New York Times had mocked rocketry pioneer Robert Goddard, asserting that a rocket could not work in the vacuum of space because it would have nothing to push against. On July 17, 1969, as Apollo 11 traveled to the Moon, the Times published a correction quoting its own earlier claim and stating that further investigation had confirmed a rocket functions in a vacuum as well as in an atmosphere, adding "The Times regrets the error." The original assertion was not deleted from the paper's archive; the correction referenced it explicitly, was dated, and was issued in the institution's own name.

Scientific publishing runs the same instrument as the corrigendum/erratum system. When an error is found in a published article, the journal does not silently re-typeset the paper; it issues a separately published, dated notice — a corrigendum (author error) or erratum (publisher error) — that references the original article by its DOI, states precisely what was wrong, and gives the correction. Services like Crossref's CrossMark surface these notices on the article record so a later reader always sees that a correction exists and can retrieve both versions. The original paper stays citable and unchanged; the correction is bound to it by the persistent identifier. This preserves the scientific record's auditability: a meta-analyst or replicator can reconstruct exactly what was claimed, when, and how it was later revised.
