Creative writing¶
Compose and revise language primarily through imaginative, literary, dramatic, or aesthetic craft, shaping voice, form, image, character, scene, and narrative experience beyond routine expository or instrumental demands.
Core Idea¶
Creative writing is the composition and revision of texts whose organizing purpose substantially depends on imaginative, literary, dramatic, or aesthetic craft rather than only on routine technical, academic, administrative, or news-reporting conventions. Writers generate and select linguistic possibilities, arrange voice and form, manage information and perspective, test the reader's developing experience, and revise at scales from diction to overall structure so that craft choices carry meaning rather than merely transmit propositions.
Its autonomous residual is the purposeful shaping of language as an imaginative or literary artifact through craft and revision, not the whole of literature, every original sentence, an unedited outpouring, or a claim that factual writing cannot be creative.
Scope of Application¶
Creative writing applies when the analyst can specify a language-making practice and its developing text, situated in a genre, audience relation, compositional process, and factual or fictional contract and establish that the text is intentionally shaped through literary or imaginative craft, its form and language contribute to the work's effect, and revision can evaluate choices against an artistic, narrative, dramatic, or experiential aim. The entry describes an artistic and educational practice. It does not evaluate any living writer, promise therapeutic outcomes, or treat workshop conventions as universally appropriate.
Clarity¶
A clear claim names the carrier, governing rule, assumptions, and recognition test. This matters because creative writing can mean a family of texts, the act of composing them, an academic discipline, a degree program, or classroom exercises, while creative does not mean unconstrained by genre or factual obligations.
Manages Complexity¶
