Cross-listed Classification¶
Assign a bridging work several classifications at once — one focal primary plus any number of secondaries — so it stays findable from every domain it spans, without forcing a single arbitrary home or minting a hybrid category.
Core Idea¶
Cross-listed classification is the cataloging practice of assigning a single work multiple classifications when its content genuinely spans more than one field, refusing a single-home assignment so the work stays findable from each class it belongs to. The Mathematics Subject Classification specifies it precisely: every paper declares exactly one primary code (its focal home) and any number of secondary codes (additional areas it addresses). The primary fixes the focal index entry; secondaries ensure the work also surfaces when searchers browse those areas.
Scope of Application¶
Cross-listed classification lives across descriptive cataloging and classification governance — indexing subfields where a multi-parent work-to-class relation records a bridging work in multiple homes within one scheme under primary/secondary typing.

Clarity¶
The concept makes legible a loss single-home assignment imposes silently: forcing a spanning work into one class excludes it, invisibly, from every other class it belongs to. The recurring question stops being "which is this work's home?" and becomes "from which classes should it be discoverable, and which is focal?" — turning an arbitrary pick into a deliberate decision with stateable costs (forced-choice exclusion versus index dilution). It also makes primary/secondary precise: two discoverability roles, not a ranking of importance.
Manages Complexity¶
Bridging works are combinatorially large — any pair of areas can have papers spanning them — and a single-home scheme accommodates that only by minting hybrid categories or losing works to forced choice. The multi-parent relation dissolves the dilemma: the vocabulary stays fixed while a work carries as many existing codes as warranted. The indexer makes two bounded decisions (one focal home, plus warranted secondaries), and overlap becomes a readable aggregate — which classes act as bridges.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The typed multi-home relation supports diagnosis (read an assignment fault off a discoverability symptom — a bridging work unfindable means a missing secondary; a cluttered index means over-assignment; a hybrid-category menagerie means no multi-parent relation), interventionist prediction (add a secondary to gain a home without moving the focal entry; promote one to relocate it), boundary-drawing (how many homes, which focal, intra-scheme not inter-scheme), and a revision obligation (migrate secondary holders too).
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within descriptive cataloging the concept transfers as mechanism, primary/secondary roles and maintenance diagnostics intact — MSC, ACM, PACS, patent, course, and grant coding are co-instances of one multi-home discipline. Beyond cataloging the transfer becomes the parent property: a taxonomy can be a DAG not a tree, carried by hierarchy and classification (with cross_cutting_relationship adjacent). The primary/secondary typing, code vocabularies, exchange syntax, and revision hygiene are cataloging infrastructure that does not survive extraction.
