Core Idea

A Crown Group is the smallest clade containing all living representatives of a focal biological group. Locate those extant lineages on a phylogenetic tree, find their most recent common ancestor, and include that ancestor and every descendant—living or extinct. The resulting descendant-closed clade is the crown group. A fossil does not need living descendants to belong: if it branches within the crown ancestor's descendants, it is a crown member.

The definition ties a familiar living radiation to its evolutionary history. Crown birds, for example, include the most recent common ancestor of all living birds and all descendants of that ancestor, including extinct branches such as the dodo.

Scope of Application

Phylogenetic systematics uses crown groups to give extant-anchored meanings to biological names. Paleontology uses the crown/stem/total framework to place fossils relative to living diversity without forcing every close fossil relative inside a modern group. Budd and Jensen applied strict crown and stem concepts to reassess early bilaterian fossils, illustrating how crown membership can be younger than the origin of a broader lineage or body-plan feature.

Clarity

“All living representatives” is relative to the focal concept and knowledge state. If a supposedly extinct lineage is rediscovered or an extant species is reclassified, the set of anchors and therefore the crown node may change. Sampling only one extant species cannot define a multi-lineage crown through an MRCA; operational definitions often name at least two extant internal specifiers or use formal minimum-crown-clade language.

Manages Complexity

Crown Group integrates living biology and the fossil record through one topology rule. It lets researchers describe a fossil as a stem mammal, crown bird, or total-group arthropod without requiring it to possess every familiar modern trait. This separates ancestry from morphological grade and makes disagreements local: topology, specifiers, or name usage can be challenged independently.

  1. If a fossil descends from the MRCA of all living members, it belongs to the crown even if its own lineage is extinct. 2. If a fossil is more closely related to the crown than to any other living group but branches before the crown node, it is a stem member. 3. If tree topology moves a fossil across the crown node, membership changes without any change in the fossil's observed traits.

Knowledge Transfer

The general reasoning lesson is to separate selection of anchors from closure rule. Once the extant specifiers and topology are fixed, membership follows; most disputes arise upstream in those inputs or downstream in which historical name should label the result.
