Cultural probe¶
An evocative design-research kit through which participants self-document fragments of daily life to inspire, rather than statistically represent, design possibilities.
Core Idea¶
Designers give participants postcards, diaries, maps, cameras, prompts, or playful tasks that invite ambiguous personal responses about routines, values, places, and aspirations. Participant-created traces open access to private or tacit experience while ambiguity and aesthetic interpretation provoke designer imagination instead of functioning as a standardized measurement instrument. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of design research. It is the domain-specific identity determined by the probe is participant-completed, intentionally evocative and open-ended, ethically consented, interpreted as inspiration, and not overclaimed as representative evidence.
Scope of Application¶
