Cumulative Dose¶
Locate biological harm or benefit in the time-integral of an exposure stream rather than any single event, so a course of individually safe doses can still cross a threshold on the running stock — which reducing the present rate cannot undo.
Core Idea¶
Cumulative dose is the principle that total integrated exposure governs biological outcome independently of any single event: harm accrues even when each dose falls below the immediate-effect threshold, because the gating variable is the time-integral of the exposure stream, not the instantaneous rate. It commits to a rate-versus-stock distinction — the flow and the running sum are different quantities with different thresholds — and the stock is typically irreversible once accrued.

Clarity¶
Naming cumulative dose makes legible a confusion that defeats per-event safety reasoning: the conflation of rate with stock. It dissolves the false inference "each dose is safe, therefore the course is safe" by holding flow and total apart. It sharpens the question from "is this dose acceptable?" to "where does this put the running total, and how much headroom remains?" — and clarifies why reducing the rate cannot undo an already-integrated total.
Manages Complexity¶
An exposure history taken event by event is intractably high-dimensional. Cumulative dose compresses it to a single scalar — the time-integral — and asserts that one number gates the outcome. Three reductions do the work: dimensional collapse (an unordered multitude becomes one sum, since the stock is well-mixed), rate-from-stock separation (two quantities, two thresholds), and irreversibility as a one-way gate that fixes which interventions can work.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The signature move reasons about the stock, not the event, explicitly blocking "each dose is safe, therefore the course is safe." A predictive move reads the outcome off where the running integral sits relative to the stock's threshold, computing remaining headroom. A boundary move — the irreversibility gate — rules out rate-only fixes and narrows admissible interventions to three: cap the total, sustain rate reduction across the whole horizon, or act on the accrued burden. A dimensional-collapse move discards order only when the stock is well-mixed.
