Customer-Discovery Theater¶
Diagnose fake product discovery by the single structural test of whether the inquiry is permitted to change the plan — the tell being a long track record of discovery that has never killed or redirected a roadmap.
Core Idea¶
The product pathology in which a team performs the outward forms of customer discovery — interviews, surveys, prototype tests, voice-of-the-customer boards — without those activities being structurally permitted to change the decision they nominally inform. The team has already committed; the rituals are run for a process gate, methodology compliance, or stakeholder cover. Its defining commitment is the decoupling of the inquiry's evidence from the decision's outcome: theater is the case where the decision is downstream-stable regardless of what the inquiry finds.
Scope of Application¶
Lives across the product- and innovation-practice subfields where teams run a prescriptive discovery methodology (Lean Startup, Design Thinking, Jobs-to-be-Done).
- Startup customer development — founders steer a friendly sample toward confirming the founding bet.
- Corporate product management — mandated quarterly interviews reporting into a locked roadmap.
- Public-sector innovation labs — design-thinking workshops unable to reverse a policy already made.
- Education-reform pilots — teacher consultation ahead of curriculum mandates independent of it.
- Health-tech adoption — patient-advisory boards convened after vendor contracts are signed.
Clarity¶
Naming the theater pulls apart three things "we did customer discovery" fuses: confirmatory inquiry (seeks support but still responsive), disconfirmatory inquiry (framed to surface what would kill the hypothesis), and theater (findings the decision is insulated from). Since all three present identically, the label lets a practitioner stop arguing interview quality and ask the structural question: is this inquiry permitted to change the plan?
Manages Complexity¶
Auditing whether discovery is real otherwise invites forensic sprawl across a dozen contestable dimensions. The concept collapses that to one operational scalar — the plan-kill track record — read against a counterfactual: if the inquiry returned disconfirming evidence, would the plan change? Only insulation produces a long run of discovery that always confirms, and the fix follows the same branch: poor execution versus structural decoupling.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses a diagnostic reading a flat plan-kill track record as insulation, a which-case diagnostic discriminating theater from confirmatory and disconfirmatory inquiry by the counterfactual rather than the artifacts, an interventionist move matching the fix to the cause (repairing decoupling by giving the readout binding power), and boundary-drawing separating institutional theater from cognitive bias, from who-decides, and from inquiry working correctly.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within product and innovation practice the diagnosis transfers as mechanism — the counterfactual test, plan-kill scalar, cause-split, and repair kit carry intact wherever a prescriptive discovery methodology runs. Beyond it, the general pattern — ceremonial adoption of inquiry insulated from the decision, run for legitimacy — travels as mechanism to security theater, environmental assessments that never block, and audit committees that never escalate, all co-instances of the parent (Meyer & Rowan's ceremonial adoption, isomorphic mimicry). The customer-interview vocabulary is the home-bound cargo; the lesson rides the parent pattern.
