Dark pattern¶
A deliberately deceptive interface design that steers users toward choices they would not otherwise make by obscuring, manipulating or asymmetrically presenting options.
Core Idea¶
Named forms include obstruction, sneaking, forced action, interface interference and nagging, but legal definitions and evidence of intent or effect vary by jurisdiction and research method. Interface structure changes salience, defaults, friction, timing or disclosure so a commercially favored action is easier or more likely than an informed alternative. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
